Caning Masterclass
The wonderful Rachael South joins us at Bristol Upholstery Collective to hold an exclusive Caning Masterclass.
Rachael has an unmatched passion for traditionally caning, restoring and upholstering chairs, with a deep knowledge of chair caning, rush, Danish paper cord and other seat weaving techniques. Her skills have been passed down from her grandfather and father, as well as worked with weavers in India, Central America and Europe.
Beginners
Following an incredible introduction to Rachel South and her family craft heritage, you will be guided through each stage of the caning process, learning how to get the fine split canes to weave into a glorious pattern. You will complete a sample frame with patterned caning. Each student will be taken through all 6 stages of weaving and take the frame home to keep.
Intermediate
As an intermediate student, you will build on the caning skills you already have from our beginner's frame exercise. Rachael will guide you through applying your caning knowledge to a piece of furniture you have sourced. Ideally, this would be a small bedroom chair.
*Please note: You must have produced a beginner's sample frame with us before moving on to an intermediate project - trust us! Start at the beginning.
